At the beginning of 2024, Nvidia introduced enhanced versions of its GeForce RTX 4000 series graphics cards with the "Super" designation. The first updated graphics card to hit the market was the RTX 4070 Super, which we will compare to the base RTX 4070 and examine its capabilities in cryptocurrency mining. Especially considering that the cost has remained unchanged compared to the regular RTX 4070, remaining at $599.
Comparison of Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super graphics cards:
Specifications | RTX 4070 |
RTX 4070 Super |
RTX4070 VS RTX4070S |
---|---|---|---|
Release date | 13.04.2023 | 15.01.2024 | |
Frequency GPU (BOOST) MHz | 1920 (2475) | 1980 (2475) | - |
Cuda Cores | 5888 | 7168 | +21,7% |
GFLOPS FP32 | 29150 | 35480 | +21,7% |
Memory | 12Gb GDDR6X | 12GB GDDR6X | - |
Memory bus width | 192 | 192 | - |
Total memory bandwidth | 504 | 504 | - |
Power usage | 200W | 220W | +10% |
Announced price, USD | 599 USD | 599 USD | - |
From the table, it can be seen that the main change in the RTX 4070 Super compared to the RTX 4070 is the increased number of CUDA cores by 21.7%, which, in turn, affected the GPU chip's performance in FP32 mathematical calculations by the same percentage. This parameter directly influences the performance of graphics cards in mining GPU-dependent algorithms such as Autolykos, Beamhash, Blake3, MTP, Octopus, and others.
On the other hand, the memory subsystem of the RTX 4070 Super remains unchanged, and the memory bandwidth will be at the same level of 504 Gbit/s. Therefore, on algorithms like KawPoW, FiroPow, and Ethash, the mining performance will remain the same as that of the regular RTX 4070.
Hashrate of the RTX 4070 Super on various mining algorithms:
ETHash/ETChash (Ethereum classic): 66Mh/s 140W
EthashB3 (Hypra): 66Mh/s 140W
KawPow (Ravencoin): 35Mh/s 200W
Pyrinhash (Pyrin): 7,8Gh/s 160W
Karlsenhash (Karlsen): 1600Mh/s 125W
NexaPow (Nexa): 120Mh/s 190W
Autolykos2 (Ergo): 122Mh/s 80W
DynexSolve (Dynex): 3.86Mh/s 80W
Radiant (Radiant): 1.3GH/s 120W
Blake3 (Alephium): 2.4Gh/s 160W
Blake3Ironfish (Ironfish): 21,5GH/s 150W

Conclusion: The RTX 4070 Super graphics card received minimal changes and, in terms of its parameters, sits squarely between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti. Since the memory subsystems of all three models (RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti) are identical, they will show similar results on memory-dependent algorithms. The GPU difference can also be considered minimal as they are manufactured using the same TSMC 4N technological process. In other words, the energy efficiency of all three Nvidia graphics cards is the same, and the increase in performance is achieved through equivalent increases in power consumption.
The choice between the three considered graphics cards should primarily be based on price. As the RTX 4070 Super has the same recommended price as the RTX 4070, and the RTX 4070 Ti is significantly more expensive at $799, the choice in favor of the RTX 4070 seems obvious. However, it is essential to consider the prices in retail stores, as the RTX 4070 Super is a new model, and prices in stores may be inflated, while last year's models, RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti, may be sold below the recommended prices.
Among all the showcased innovations, the RTX 4070 Ti Super with a recommended price of $799 appears to be the most interesting solution. It has the potential to become one of the optimal graphics cards for mining in the entire RTX 4000 series, which we will definitely consider in our future reviews as a mining graphics card.
