Apple laptops have recently enjoyed well-deserved popularity, primarily due to the proprietary ARM processor. Today, the newest and most productive processor for laptops and computers from Apple is the M4 MAX processor.  There are already many tests of this processor in work programs and even in games, but we are primarily interested in how this solution will work in mining cryptocurrencies.

For the tests, we used a MacBook Pro 16 laptop with an M4 MAX processor in its maximum configuration, i.e. with 16 cores and 40 graphics cores, while equipped with 128 GB of RAM. In the settings, the laptop is turned on to maximum power mode.


The hashrate in the mining of the Apple M4 MAX processor:

Mining on a laptop is of more academic interest than practical, due to the low profitability and rapid wear of an expensive device. However, there was a time in history when mining on laptops was even more profitable than on discrete video cards, due to the fact that for the price of one video card at the time of the maximum mining boom, you could buy one or two laptops that would give a comparable hashrate.  

From the above tests, it can be noted that the hashrate of the M4 MAX using the Ethash algorithm is comparable to the AMD Radeon RX 480 /580 graphics card popular with miners in the past. 
When compared with previous models of M processors, Apple has made significant progress here. So for the M1 processor, the hashrate for mining Monero (RandomX) was at the level of 2380H/s, for M1 PRO the hashrate was 3470 MH/s, and for M1 MAX it was 3513 MH/s. In other words, over 4 generations, Apple's processors have become 2.5 times more powerful in mining, which is still not enough to use Apple laptops in mining cryptocurrencies on an ongoing basis.
